Anyone else tired of guys whistling, honking, yelling, groping, or pleading for a smile, while you walk down the street? Then when you ignore the guy he in turn calls you ugly, a bitch, a skank and informs you of how lucky you are to receive such compliments? That horrible sinking feeling where you feel helpless, humiliated, and scared. We've experienced this behavior and we know many of you have as well. Not only is it harassment but it's also a way to keep women in a state of fear, a way for some men to exert dominance and power over women. It's not fair or right that we as women can't walk down the street in peace without some creep sexualizing our bodies, making us feel like public property. No one should have to feel uncomfortable in public because some guy can't control himself. We as a society have allowed these creeps to get away with public harassment and it needs to end now. We as women need to stand up against this degrading behavior. Let our families, friends, and peers know that this behavior is unacceptable and an invasion of a woman's personal space. Men also need to take a stand and inform their friends that catcalling is not ok. It does not matter what a woman is wearing, how much makeup she is on, or if she is completely naked, harassment is not ok. There are no excuses. Please educate yourselves about street harassment, educate friends/family, and promote legislation against this behavior. Its time for women to reclaim their space and privacy. This behavior is appalling and we need to start a public dialogue against harassment/violence against women. Let our voices be heard.
